Amateur Radio License Testing
The Somerset County Amateur Radio Club (SCARC) is proud to offer ARRL‑accredited Amateur Radio license exams throughout the year. Whether you’re brand‑new to the hobby or working toward an upgrade, our Volunteer Examiners are here to help you succeed.
We host at least four test sessions annually, giving applicants multiple opportunities to earn or upgrade their FCC Amateur Radio license.

Why Take Your Exam With SCARC?

Free 1‑Year Membership
Anyone who passes their exam with us receives a complimentary one‑year SCARC membership. This gives new hams immediate access to club activities, resources, and a welcoming community.
Access to Club Radios
New licensees are encouraged to get on the air. Our club stations are available for supervised use, helping you gain confidence and hands‑on experience.
Supportive Environment
Our members are always ready to answer questions, offer guidance, and help you navigate your first steps in Amateur Radio.
Opportunities to Operate
SCARC hosts several operating events each year, giving new and experienced operators alike the chance to practice, learn, and enjoy the hobby together.
Exam Requirements
First‑Time Applicants
If this is your first Amateur Radio exam:
- – You must have an FRN (Federal Registration Number) before testing.
- – Social Security numbers are not accepted.
- – Register for an FRN through the FCC CORES system.
- – The exam fee is $15, payable by cash or check. (Checks should be made out to ARRL/VEC.)
Upgrading Your License
If you already hold an Amateur Radio license:
- – Bring a printed copy of your current FCC license.
- – You can download your license from the FCC website.
- – The same $15 exam fee applies.
Pre‑Registration
We ask all applicants to pre‑register for the exam session. Pre‑registration helps us prepare materials, ensures adequate seating, and speeds up the check‑in process on exam day.
What to Expect on Exam Day
- – Arrive a few minutes early to complete paperwork.
- – Bring a valid photo ID.
- – Bring your FRN and any required documentation.
- – Calculators are allowed, but no programmable memory may be used.
- – Results are typically available shortly after the exam is completed.
