SCARC Membership Questions

Joining an amateur radio club is one of the most rewarding ways to dive into the world of radio technology. Whether you are an electronics enthusiast, a hobbyist, or just curious about how global communication works, these communities offer a wealth of knowledge and camaraderie.

Do I Need a License to Join?

No, you do not need to be a licensed amateur radio operator to join! Many people join clubs specifically to learn the ropes before they ever take their first exam. If you are interested in shortwave listening, emergency preparedness, or just the technical side of the hobby, you are more than welcome to participate in club meetings and events.

Why Join Our Community?

  • Expert Mentorship: Learn from “Elmers” (experienced operators) who can guide you through everything from basic electronics to advanced digital modes.
  • Hands-on Learning: Get access to club equipment and stations to see radio in action before investing in your own gear.
  • Licensing Support: Many clubs offer study groups and testing sessions to help you earn your Technician Class license when you’re ready.
  • Public Service: Discover how we support local events and provide vital communication during emergencies.
