About the Somerset County Amateur Radio Club (SCARC)
The Somerset County Amateur Radio Club (SCARC) is dedicated to promoting, supporting, and educating the community about the hobby and public service of Amateur Radio.
Founded with the adoption of its bylaws on February 6, 1962, incorporated in 1964, and recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2005, SCARC continues to serve educational, scientific, and charitable purposes throughout Somerset County and beyond.
Who We Are
SCARC is a general‑interest Amateur Radio club. Our members enjoy a wide range of activities across the hobby, from HF contesting and digital modes to emergency communications, antennas, portable operations, and more.
We’re not focused on any single specialty. Instead, we embrace the full spectrum of Amateur Radio.
Our regular meetings often include:
- Guest speakers
- Technical presentations
- Demonstrations
- Hands‑on learning opportunities
Whether you’re newly licensed, returning to the hobby, or simply curious, you’re invited to visit and see what we’re all about.
Public Service & Emergency Communications
SCARC proudly supports the Somerset County Emergency Management Office as an auxiliary communications team. Several of our members also participate in the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES).
RACES is a communications protocol used by:
- FEMA
- FCC Part 97, Section 407
- Many state and local Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS) programs nationwide
These protocols help ensure reliable communication during emergencies when traditional systems may be overloaded or unavailable.
Additional information about RACES is available on their official website.
